Theatrics in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly

Theatrics are not new to Indian politics. We have seen representatives of aam junta resorting to strange ways many a times to convey their messages in the House. BJP MPs showing money, allegedly given to them for making favors during trust vote last year by ruling parties, or Trinamool Congress chief and current Rail Minister Mamata Banerjee clasping collar of SP leader Amar Singh in Lok Sabha well few years ago is testimony of it.

Tuesday’s high voltage drama in Jammu and Kashmir assembly over CM Omar Abdullah’s alleged involvement in a sex scandal and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti getting into an argument with the Speaker over the issue put the in-power National Conference on backfoot for some time.

However, the urgency with which Omar Abdullah offered to resign from his post and face investigations in connection has stolen the thunder from the Opposition party. Also, at first his move may appear as one taken in a spur of moment, but this surely will help Omar in building his image among masses who will think of him as a leader wanting to come clean by offering to quit, unlike those who continue to remain on their posts despite slapped with severe charges.

The UPA government giving clean cheat to Omar in the case and the Governor asking him to continue as the CM was more or less expected by many of us considering the tie-up between NC and Congress in the state and at the Centre. But one thing is for sure and that the intensity with which PDP tried to besiege the CM has been made blunt by the Abdullah scion in a dramatic, but still politically correct maneuver.
